Shirodhara
Shirodhara Therapy in Visakhapatnam
Shirodhara is one of the most recognisable therapies in Kerala Ayurveda: a continuous, unbroken stream of warm medicated Thailam poured over the forehead for the length of the session. Most people find it deeply quieting.
Does this sound like you?
People arrive describing it in different words, but it usually comes down to some of these.
- Your mind will not settle at the end of the day
- You fall asleep late, or wake at three and stay awake
- You have been running on adrenaline for months
- Headaches that come with tension rather than illness
- You find it hard to concentrate for as long as you used to
- You have had Shirodhara before and want it done traditionally
People arrive for this one having heard the name rather than the description, and are sometimes surprised by how simple it looks. It is also a common choice for people who find hands-on massage too much, since Shirodhara asks nothing of you but stillness. Many book it alongside therapy for a physical condition rather than instead of it.
How Ayurveda approaches this
The warmth, the steady rhythm of the stream, and the stillness it asks of you are the therapy. In traditional practice Shirodhara is used to settle an overactive mind, and it is often chosen for people carrying stress, disturbed sleep, or mental fatigue. The Thailam is selected for you and warmed before the session begins.
Traditional practice does not chase the symptom alone. The therapist also looks at the routine that produced it — how you sit, how you sleep, what you lift — because a condition that took years to build rarely resolves in a single visit.
What to expect in a session
Nothing here is rushed and nothing is hidden from you. A first visit usually runs like this.
- A conversation firstThe therapist asks how long you have had the discomfort, what makes it worse, what you do all day, and what treatment you are already receiving. Bring any scans, X-rays, or prescriptions you have.
- PreparationYou change in a private treatment room. Herbal Thailams are warmed and selected for your condition. You will be told what is about to happen before it happens.
- The therapyWarm medicated Thailam and traditional Kerala bodywork focused on the forehead and scalp, with the body kept warm and still throughout. Pressure is set to what you can comfortably take, and you can ask the therapist to ease off at any point.
- Rest and aftercareA short rest afterwards, then simple guidance on food, warmth, and movement for the rest of the day — and an honest view on whether a course of sessions is worth it for you.
Typical session length is confirmed when you book, since it depends on the condition and how you respond to the first visit.
Looking after yourself afterwards
What you do in the hours after a session matters more than most people expect. Nothing here is complicated.
- Rest for a while before going anywhere. Sit quietly rather than walking straight out into traffic or a meeting.
- Keep warm and drink warm water. Cold drinks and cold showers work against the warmth the session has built up.
- Eat something light. A heavy meal straight afterwards tends to leave people sluggish.
- Leave the heavy work for tomorrow. Gentle movement is good; lifting, gym sessions and long drives are better postponed.
- Expect Thailam in your hair and on your skin. Plan the timing so you can go home and wash at your own pace rather than rushing.
- Mild tenderness the next day is normal. Sharp or increasing pain is not — message us and we will talk it through.
When to see a doctor first
We would rather lose a booking than treat something that needs a hospital. If any of the following applies to you, please get medical advice before you come to us.
Persistent insomnia, low mood that will not lift, or headaches that are new, severe, or different from your usual pattern deserve a doctor’s assessment before you try a complementary therapy. Shirodhara is not a treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, or any neurological condition, and we will say so if that is what you are looking for. Tell us as well if you have a scalp condition, a recent head injury, or are pregnant, so we can advise honestly on whether this is suitable.

Questions people ask about shirodhara
What does it actually feel like?
Warm, steady, and monotonous in the way that rain on a roof is monotonous. The stream moves slowly across the forehead. Most people stop noticing it after a few minutes, and a fair number fall asleep, which is not a problem.
Will my hair be covered in oil afterwards?
Yes. There is no way around it — the therapy is oil, poured for the whole session. Plan to go home and wash at your own pace rather than back to work, and bring a scarf or cap if you would rather not travel with it showing.
How many sessions do people usually have?
That depends on why you have come and how you respond, and it is discussed at your free consultation rather than sold to you as a package in advance. Some people book a single session; others have a short course.
Can I have Shirodhara along with treatment for my back or neck?
Often, yes, and many people do. Whether both happen in one visit or on separate days depends on you and on what the therapist judges sensible — ask at the consultation.
